Confirmation

Confirmation is a three & a half year program. Confirmation is intended for 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th grade students. Throughout the school year students are expected to attend activities twice a week -- Wednesday night activity night, from 5:15 pm to 8:30 pm, includes supper and relationship building time after the class session is completed -- and Sunday morning classes, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am. In 10th grade students meet monthly rather than weekly. They then make their confirmation in the fall of the 11th grade. During these very important years, your son or daughter will be instructed weekly by Confirmation teachers, Minister of Parish Life and the Pastor.

Confirmation is designed to assist young people in the process of affirming their baptism (claiming the Christian faith as what they believe in their own baptisms). It is also designed to assist parents in the process of fulfilling the promises they made at their child's baptism (bringing them to the worship services at God's house, teaching them the Lord's Prayer, the Creed, and the Ten Commandments, and place in their hands the Holy Scriptures).

We hope that during their confirmation experience the students will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of the Bible, Luther's Small Catechism and Lutheran theology.

  • Develop relationships with their peers, the pastors and other adults.

  • Add insight and skills in using their faith to help understand and make healthy choices regarding the challenging issues they face daily.

Curriculum
  • Confirmation Kick-off: Teachers, students and Parents will get together to discuss the curriculum and discuss the expectations of the teacher, students and parents.

  • Sunday Instruction: Every Sunday from 9:45am - 10:45am September though May.

  • Wednesday Instruction: Wednesday evenings September though May at 5:30pm with an evening dinner provided by parents of students and served in the Fellowship Hall. This is followed by religious instruction. After class you are free to hang out, play foos-ball, Ping-Pong, do homework, and connect. Classes are for 8th and 9th graders.
    See Youth Page

  • Mentor Project: During the season of Lent each student will do confirmation with a faith mentor. Each student will matched up with an adult in the congregation to be his or her own mentor. Together the mentor / mentee pairs will do planned studies and discussions together, attend Lenten worship together, do service projects together, and any other activities that can be planned. The purpose of this type of mentoring is not so much to pass on a body of knowledge or information from mentor to young person as it is to enable the building of a relationship between a mature believer and a young person so that an environment for sharing faith can occur.

  • Mentor Dinner is a fun time of fellowship and an exciting opportunity to hear about the mentor projects that the students and mentors worked on through Lent. The 8th and 9th grade students and their entire families are encouraged to attend. There is a pot luck dinner followed by a presentation.

  • 8th & 9th Grade Retreat: The hope of this three day retreat is to reaffirm and strengthen the faith life our students. It is a time for fellowship and relationship building.

  • 11th Grade Retreat , the confirmation class will put together there individual as well as there group creeds to be presented at their confirmation service in October.

  • Confirmation Dinner & Photos: The evening starts with dinner and fellowship. Then the confirmands show the stoles they made, and explain what each symbol on there stoles means. After the short program pictures will be taken.

  • Special Presentations: Henry Ortelt - Holocaust survivor for grades 8 - 10: Mr. Ortelt will speak to students about his experience growing up in Germany from his 1938 until his liberation from a concentration camp. He an amazing speaker -- heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time. He uses the analogy of an 18 link chain to demonstrate how each link was important to his survival, 18 being the numeric value for the Hebrew word for "life." He also wrote an autobiography called "An Unbroken Chain: My Journey through the Holocaust."
