Baptism

The sacraments of Holy Baptism carry God's grace -- forgiveness, life and salvation -- to God's people. These sacraments are gladly offered for you and your family.

"In the waters of Baptism we are reborn children of God and inheritors of eternal life. By water and the Holy Spirit we are made members of the church which is the body of Christ." -Lutheran Book of Worship

Baptism is an important once-in-a-lifetime sacrament in your child's faith journey. Jesus said to his followers,

"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit" (Matthew 28:19).

Baptism is God's promise to us to wash away our sins and deliver us from sin. In this one-session, one-hour class, you will learn more about the promises baptism holds for your child, as well as the promises you make for your child. You will learn new ways to help your children understand themselves as children of God. You will also meet others bringing their children to begin their journey of faith. Please call Salem for more details of the program.

Prayer Chain

'We will give ourselves continually to prayer." Acts 6:4

The prayer chain at Salem provides immediate prayer for those who request prayer support. It is also a way for any person to act on God's command to love one another. "So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples." John 13:34-35

We pray regularly and intentionally for people in need or sickness and for those who have died. We continue to pray for people on that list until we know that their need has been met. To request prayers by the prayer chain for yourself or others, please contact the church office to be put in touch with the Prayer Request coordinator. Requests are promptly passed onto each member through a telephone chain. YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY IS ASSURED.

Visitation

Salem's visitation pastor makes over 30 hospital and home visits per month, and performs funeral services.

Excerpt from Visitation Pastors annual message:
Anyone making home or care center or hospital visits in this parish knows that a frequent comment at the end of the visit is, "Thanks for coming." As visitation pastor, it is my privilege to hear these words many times each month. The appreciation expressed is not meant for me alone. It is meant for the Salem congregation. The people I see are thankful to have Salem Lutheran as their church home. They appreciate telephone calls from members, poinsettia plants at Christmas time, bulletins, newsletters, devotional books, and the good word of the church staff now and in the past years.
Each year brings changes in our world and in our lives. Changes are sometimes unsettling, but they also are opportunities for growth in knowledge, in faith, and in appreciation for what the Lord means to us. The Savior has come. He leads us. and keeps us. It is fitting for us every day to say with words and in deeds, "Thank you, Lord, for coming. "

Acolytes
Acolytes are responsible for lighting and extinguishing all altar candles before and after church services. Volunteers are needed as leaders and helpers who coordinate training of all youth in grades 5-8 for acolyte and cross bearer duties.

Altar care
Altar Guild is made up of church volunteers who prepare the chancel and set up for regular, special and communion services. Volunteers are needed for Saturday set-up, Sunday Communion set-up and clean up after the 11:00 a.m. service.

Music
The need and opportunity always exists for those who would like to participate in vocal or instrumental music to enhance the worship service .. Salem has handbell and vocal choir organizations and volunteer members are ALWAYS welcome.

Greeters, Readers and Communion Servers
At each worship service, volunteers stand at the entrance to the sanctuary and greet the worshippers as they enter. This helps members get better acquainted with one another and allows us to identify visitors and help them feel welcome in our community.

Volunteers read the lessons from the lectern and volunteers have the opportunity to help serve Communion during the services.

Sound
The sanctuary features a state-of-the-art 24 channel sound system which needs to be operated at each worship service. Sound operators all assist with various musical teams, special occasions and meetings. Orientation and training are available to those interested.

Ushers
When you usher at Salem you are the first person a visitor meets when coming in the door. Your greeting of friendship and spirit of helpfulness conveys that very important first impression. Members and friends of Salem also look forward to your welcome. Whatever you can do to make people feel welcome will support their receptivity to the service of worship. Think of your role as that of a host or hostess welcoming a guest into your home. Time to Arrive Be here at least thirty minutes before the service begins.
