Topic: Salem goes to Tanzania, Africa
Comments: In late August (2006) some Salem members are going on an adventure of a lifetime on a trip to visit our sister congregation in Magome, Tanzania.
The 14-15 day trip would feature a 2-4 day stay in Magome visiting families, worshipping with the local congregations, visiting their school, and helping them as is practical. The group will spend time at the Lutheran Diocese headquarters in Iringa - meeting the bishop, visiting the college (Tumaini University) we have helped sponsor, seeing the Ilula health/medical clinic we support, and learning about other features of African culture.
The group will bring souvenir items from Salem and Minnesota, educational and medical supplies, and possibly solar ovens.
Present plans include a 2-3 day safari into a large game park and a possible trip to Mt. Kilimanjaro. Travel in Africa will be in a small tourist bus or land rovers.
The flight would be from the Twin Cities to Amsterdam and then on to Dar es Salaam. From Dar es Salaam, Salem members will travel about 300 miles by bus to Iringa. Accommodations would be in hotels except a few days staying with families in Magone.
If you have an interest in finding out more about this adventure/mission trip, please contact Jack Schlukebier at 651-224-9144.

Topic: Salem Group Heads To Guatemala
Comments: March 19 to April 2, Kathryn Wyatt and Betty Bauer will leave for Guatemala joined by 12 other individuals from Gloria Dei, Augustana, Royal Redeemer and 3 persons from California. They will return to San Lucas as they have done in the previous years but in additions they are going to visit the Augustinian Lutheran Church (ILAG) at it's headquarters in Guatemala City. In June 2005 the St. Paul Area Synod voted to make ILAG a companion synod along with Tanzania, therefore, Salem joins the other synod churches in support of this mission. For more information call either Kathryn Wyatt (216-1527) or Betty Bauer (454-7709).

The show is: HEARTBREAK: an Interactive Installation Investigating Love, Loss & Liturgy featuring new prints, pinatas & carnival games at Louvin Gallery at the House of Mercy at 9th & Wacouta in Downtown St Paul, Minnesota www.houseofmercy.org/louvin
While you are looking at the website, be sure to subscribe for future email announcements...
This exhibition opened the day after Valentine's. It addresses repentance & redemption, loss & abundance. Essentially, I assert that Christ's sacrifice was like a piÒata- a heart made to be broken, from which comes abundant sweetness. Because of the interactive nature of this exhibition, some of the artwork was permanently changed or destroyed at the reception. However, most of the installation remains intact and on view through the first half of Lent. Lent is the liturgical season of repentance and preparation which begins this week- on Ash Wednesday. Because Lent is a somber season, many cultures revel in Carnival, a time of pranks and over-indulgence prior to Lent. Carnival ends with Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). This exhibition touches on themes of both seasons. I hope that the images and explanations on the website help you to identify with both Christ's Absolute Heartbreak and Abundant Healing.
May you have a Fat Tuesday and an Ashen Wednesday.
