Discussion of Missions
There was discussion whether or not the three mission groups to Africa, Appalachia and Guatemala should join together to highlight their activities and what form that would take. It was decided that it would be a good idea to have a "Mission Awareness" Sunday probably in conjunction with Rally Day Sunday perhaps with a taco feed. Linda, Kathryn, Jack and Betty will meet Thursday, April 17 at 4:30 at Gallaghers for supper before the Council Meeting which is at 7pm. Sandy B. Nancy W. and Paul said they would be willing to help with this project. An idea , which was enthusiastically supported, was to create a "catalogue of opportunities."
Other ideas and plans brought forward:
Bulletin board for announcements - Linda is going to pursue the idea of placing bulletin boards near the elevator downstairs and near the west entrance door so that information would be available to the congregation as they enter those doors. Linda agreed to be responsible for keeping the information up to date and Jack agreed to help her place the boards after they are acquired.
Jack suggested that we introduce Salem's web site to the congregation.
August 17 was the date chosen for a Breakfast in the Park Service - to be held at Thompson Park.
Linda is sponsoring a Salem Movie Night Saturday, March 29 at 1pm for the entire congregation. In addition she has plans for a Mystery Dinner and a Back to the 50's Day.
Betty will contact Kurt B about a congregational fishing trip. She will also look into another Garden Tour.
There was discussion about the need to more actively publicize church activities to people living close to Salem.
The Sharing Board will submit a budget for 2008-2009 which include $1.000 for ILAG and $1,000 for Pueblo de Fe.
Leanne and Betty will serve a Guatemalan/Mexican brunch after the morning service on Sunday, July 27 to raise money to sponsor students in San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. It will be open to the first 20 people who sign up. Attendees will be asked to contribute at least $50 a person. The hope is that a couple will contribute $150 (one scholarship for one year which includes, a year's tuition, a uniform and computer training.)
